Imagery Rescripting: What Is It?

Imagery rescripting is a skill that can be used in therapy to change the emotional weight or sting of a past event and its associated triggers. Sometimes we are aroused or triggered when an event in the present is similar to a traumatic event from the past. Imagery rescripting involves drawing to mind that past image or event and connecting with the emotions, sensations and thoughts associated with that experience. We draw to the mind the image as if it is happening in the present. However, we get to create the story ending this time by creating an image that is comforting and soothing, and in which our needs are met!
